Cashless at the Civic Centre

Invoices such as rates, infringements and cat/dog registration renewals can be paid online. In person and over the phone payment methods are also available. The City no longer accepts cash payments at the Civic Centre.

Will cash payments be accepted at the Civic Centre Reception after 1 July 2023?

Can I pay my rates with cash in person at the Civic Centre?

No, rates cannot be paid in cash at the Civic Centre Reception. However, cash payments for rates can be made at any Australia Post Office. There are six Australia Post Offices in the City that will accept cash payments for rates:

South Perth Post Shop, Mends Street
South Perth Angelo Street LPO
Australia Post Como Beach LPO, Preston Street
Como LPO, Canning Highway
Australia Post Karawara LPO, Waterford Plaza, Manning Road
Australia Post Manning LPO, Welwyn Avenue.

Why has the City made this change?

The City's decision to move cashless was made to protect the safety and security of our customers.

While the City recognises this decision may impact some members of our community, our priority is to protect the safety and security of our customers and employees, whilst also boosting efficiency and conveniency for customers.

Customers seeking support on how to use the City's digital portal or make a payment online can speak with a library employee at South Perth or Manning Library.

Can the City restrict legal tender?

Before making this decision, the City has examined the legal aspects prior to transitioning to a cashless system. While cash is considered a legal tender, it is not illegal for an organisation to restrict cash as a payment method. More information regarding payment methods can be found on the ACCC website.

Although the City is no longer accepting cash payments at the Civic Centre from 1 July 2023, cash payments for rates can be paid at any Australia Post Office, including six locations within the City. See FAQ 2.
