What is litter/illegal dumping?

Litter is an offence under the Litter Act 1979 and is defined as any refuse that is discarded in an open or public place and can include:
  • any material that is thrown or allowed to fall or is blown from a vehicle (including cigarette butts)
  • placing waste in a reserve or public place
  • placing domestic or commercial waste in a public rubbish bin
  • posting advertising material in an unoccupied vehicle in a public place.

Rubbish on public land

  • If you observe rubbish on public land, including verges, parks and other public areas, you can report below
  • Illegally dumped rubbish will be investigated, and the City's Rangers are authorised to issue littering fines when appropriate.

Anonymous requests

  • We encourage you to provide your details to assist with a thorough investigation
  • If you choose to remain anonymous, this may impact the City's ability to deliver a successful outcome
  • This can include closing the request without any investigation due to insufficient information
  • Your details will be strictly confidential throughout the investigation.

Raise a Request - Illegal Dumping

  • To report illegally dumped rubbish on verges, and in parks, reserves and other public locations, raise a request below
  • An officer will investigate within the next 10 business days.
