Requesting street trees
Street trees are a vital part of the City of South Perth's urban forest and provide over 800,000 square metres of tree canopy cover. As with many suburbs around Perth, the City is experiencing canopy loss on private properties and needs to plant as many trees along streets as possible to maintain a healthy urban forest.
Residents can request for a tree to be planted on their verge if there isn't one already or if there is space for more than one. City officers will determine the appropriate tree species, alignment and spacing for your verge and street in order to maintain the continuity of existing streetscapes.
Trees are planted in winter and the City contractors water them for their first two summers to help them become established. Residents are encouraged to provide extra water during hot dry periods and to continue summer watering after the initial two years.
What happens with the request?
- Tree planting requests are assessed according to location, the species availability and resources as per our - Street Tree Management Plan
- An Officer will assess the request and respond accordingly before planting
- New street trees are planted in the cool months (between July and October), after the rains have started
- New trees will be watered by the City for the first two summers
- The City is responsible for the maintenance of street trees.
How can you help?
Additional care by residents is greatly appreciated and will help assist plant survival and growth. To help, you can:
- keep grass removed from the base of developing trees as the grass surrounding the tree is removed when planted
- do not cause damage to the City's trees when mowing lawns
- report damaged trees to the City so that replacements can be arranged and
- avoid parking too close to the tree.
Cut-off date
If the City has trees available in stock, requests can be made until the third week in October for planting in the same year.
Would you like request updates?
- When raising a request, you are given the option to be notified on the request
- If you would like updates, the City encourages you to select email notifications as the preferred communication method
- You will then receive an initial email advising the reference number as well as a second email upon scheduling or completion of works with a summary of actions for your information.
