Maintenance of verges

The City encourages residents to maintain street verges adjacent to properties, to establish waterwise verge gardens and to look after their verges.

Verge mowing

  • The City mows verges by end of November each year to reduce fire risk and comply with the Fire Act
  • The City only mows once per year
  • If the concern is regarding vacant blocks with long grass, refer to our fire hazard page for further information.

Fire hazard reduction

This is not a lawn mowing service. It is undertaken for fire hazard reduction.

2025 mowing

Mowing for the 2025 fire hazard reduction will commence 20 October, starting in Kensington. Mowing will take approximately five (5) weeks to complete.

Parks mowing

Mowing schedules for parks vary depending on the type of park, weather conditions, and staffing availability:
  • Passive reserves (non-sports fields) - mowed every 3 to 5 weeks
  • Sports field surrounds - mowed every 2 to 3 weeks
  • Sports field playing surfaces - mowed weekly
  • Sump verges - mowed quarterly or as required.

Additional mowing

Additional mowing may be scheduled for specific events or to address excessive growth due to weather conditions.

Requests for mowing

Mowing is carried out as part of our scheduled maintenance program, which ensures regular upkeep across public areas.
Grass growth can vary due to weather and seasonal conditions. The City actively monitors and adjusts mowing schedules accordingly.
If you believe the grass in a particular area has become excessively long and may require additional attention, you can submit a request for consideration. Requests will be assessed based on existing schedules, weather conditions, and staff availability.

Verge landscaping

If your request is to landscape the verge, then please refer to our verge treatment page for information.
