Animal registrations

All dogs and cats in Western Australia must be microchipped and registered from three months old (for dogs) and six months old (for cats). This is a Western Australian Government requirement.

Microchipping

In accordance with the Dog Act and the Cat Act, it is a legal requirement that all dogs over the age of three (3) months and all cats over the age of six (6) months are microchipped. A veterinarian (vet), vet nurse or a person with the relevant qualifications from a registered training provider can implant a microchip in your pet.

A person who fails to ensure their dog is microchipped is liable for a fine of up to $5,000.

Microchip registration details must match the details listed on the registration application. This includes the microchip number, owner name and address.

Exemptions

If your dog or cat cannot receive a microchip for medical reasons, you may obtain an exemption certificate from a registered vet. Exemption certificates can only be issued for dogs that are three (3) months or older, or cats that are six (6) months or older, meaning that these exemptions cannot be issued to allow the sale of non-microchipped puppies and kittens.

If you hold an exemption, you will be required to provide a copy when registering your pet.

Sterilisation

Section 18 of the Cat Act mandates that all cats over six months of age must be sterilised.

Exemptions

The legislation applies to cats of all ages. However, your vet can issue an exemption if sterilising your cat is likely to have a negative impact on your cat's health and welfare.

If you hold an exemption, you will be required to provide a copy when registering your pet.

Sterilisation concession

If your dog is sterilised, registration will be charged at a reduced rate. Proof of sterilisation can be either by means of a Veterinary Surgeon Certificate, a signed Statutory Declaration or by an authorised City of South Perth Registration Officer sighting the tattoo inside your dog's ear.

If you would like your dog inspected for an ear tattoo, please bring your dog to the City's Animal Care Facility at 199 Thelma Street, Como between 12-2pm Wednesday - Sunday.

Before you begin

Prior to completing the registration below, ensure you have an electronic copy (eg scan) of the following documentation prior to commencing the registration process:

Proof of microchipping or exemption
Proof of sterilisation (if applicable), or exemption for cats if not sterilised
Proof of pension card (if applicable).

You will be required to attach this information during the registration process.

Payment

Payment will be required during the registration process. Please ensure you have your credit card available prior to commencing the registration below.

You will be presented with three payment options (eg one year, three years, or a lifetime registration). Only one amount will be required to be paid to complete the registration.
